Rebecca’s 2012 Pacific Intern Experience
“This past summer I participated in Evangelism Explosion’s internship in Fiji and needless to say, it changed my life. I recently graduated from college and had my own plans and ideas as to what I was going to do next, but I wanted to go on one last adventure before I had to face the ‘real world’ and Fiji seemed the perfect fit. God however, had a different plan for me and through my experiences in Fiji He grabbed my heart, flipped my world upside down in a way that only He can do, and changed my life.
My dad is a pastor and I grew up in a Christian home where God was talked about on an everyday basis. I thought I was a pretty dedicated Christian since I went to church every week and read my Bible every day. I had no idea how God was going to work in my heart during this internship and open my eyes to who He is and what it meant to really live for Him though. The first thing God did was to show me what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus. Not just a relationship where I talk to him once a week and only when I need something, but a living, thriving relationship that consumes my life, is the most important thing to me, and demands complete trust and dependence on Him. The second thing God did was light a fire and passion in my heart for Him and for telling everyone I meet about Him. He has opened my eyes to the things that matter in life, shown me not only His power but also the power of prayer, awakened me to spiritual warfare and the constant battle that is going on around us, and shown me the great love He has for us. All this in six weeks!
During this internship I developed a MUCH deeper and authentic relationship with Jesus, learned how to share what I believe, and was put into circumstances where I actually got to share what I believe which resulted in seeing people come to Christ and lives changed. There is nothing as amazing as sharing what you believe with someone and having God use you to open their eyes and watch them begin a relationship with Jesus. Though their life has been changed, you can’t help but have your life be changed also. Twenty-four other people also participated in this internship from places such as Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Romania, Fiji, and the United States and I now have twenty-four new brothers and sisters that live around the world. The friendships I developed during this internship are unlike any I have experienced before with a depth and intimacy that can only be from God. As I said earlier, before the internship I had my own plans as to what I was going to do with my life but God made His calling for me very clear during the six weeks in Fiji and has only made it clearer since returning home. I am going to go into full time ministry where I will be able to teach and share with others the things God has opened my eyes to and my passion for evangelism and prayer. My life was not the only life that was changed during this internship. Ask any one of the twenty-four other interns and they all have a similar story to mine about eyes being opened, a new trust and faith in God, and a clearer distinction on God’s calling for their life. If you are deciding about participating in this internship this summer I encourage you to do so, but I must warn you, don’t do it unless you are ready for God to turn your world upside down, open your eyes to unimaginable things, and change your life.”
